Globelink
A URL shortener sounds like one of those projects that should be easy to build. Save a long URL, give it a shorter one, and redirect the user when they visit it. But once the same links start getting accessed repeatedly, there is more to think about than just storing a URL in a database. Globelink was built around that problem. PostgreSQL handles the stored URL mappings, while Redis keeps frequently accessed links available without having to hit the database every time someone follows a short link. The service was built with Go, with the project becoming a practical way to work through caching, database performance, redirects, and how a small service can be structured to handle repeated traffic without making things unnecessarily complicated.
